Can You Have Cheese on the Optavia 5&1 Plan? Here's Exactly What Counts

If you're someone who loves cheese (same! 💛), you might wonder whether it still has a place on the Optavia 5&1 Plan.

Cheese isn't off-limits on the Optavia 5&1 Plan—you just need to know how to count it.

The good news? Yes—you can enjoy cheese on Optavia as long as you use the correct portions and count it appropriately within your plan.

When I was following the Optavia 5&1 Plan, I remember thinking cheese was completely off-limits. Thankfully, I learned that wasn't the case. Once I understood how different cheeses fit into the program, it became much easier to enjoy my favorite foods while staying on track.

Cheese can count as a Lean, Healthy Fat, Condiment, or Approved Snack, depending on the type and serving size.

This guide breaks everything down so you can confidently enjoy cheese while staying aligned with your Optavia plan.

Does Optavia Allow Cheese?

Yes. Cheese continues to have a place within the Optavia Lean & Green framework when consumed in the appropriate portions.

Optavia categorizes cheese in several different ways:

  • Leanest

  • Leaner

  • Lean

  • Healthy Fat

  • Condiment

  • Approved Snack

At the time this article was last reviewed, the cheese categories and portion guidance remain consistent with current Optavia Nutrition Support resources.

Let's take a look at what counts.

🧀 Cheese as a Lean Option

You may choose cheese as your Lean when it fits one of these categories.

Leanest

  • 1½ cups (12 oz.) 1% cottage cheese

Leaner

  • 1½ cups (12 oz.) 2% cottage cheese

  • 1½ cups (6 oz. by weight) shredded low-fat cheese

Lean

  • 1 cup (4 oz. by weight) shredded moderate-fat cheese

  • Approximately equal to 4 light string cheese sticks

⭐ Tip

Optavia recommends weighing shredded cheese rather than relying solely on measuring cups, since shred size and density vary by brand.

🧀 Cheese as a Healthy Fat

These each count as one Healthy Fat:

  • 1 wedge Laughing Cow Original

  • 2 wedges Laughing Cow Light

  • 1 Mini Babybel Light

  • 10 pieces Laughing Cow Gourmet

  • 1 tablespoon regular cream cheese

⭐ Tip

Regular cream cheese counts as a Healthy Fat rather than a Lean. If using whipped cream cheese, check the nutrition information since serving sizes can vary by brand.

🧀 Cheese as a Condiment

These count as Condiments:

  • 1 tablespoon low-fat cream cheese

  • 1 tablespoon grated or shredded Parmesan cheese

Parmesan is one of my favorite ways to add a lot of flavor with a very small serving.

🧀 Cheese as an Approved Snack

If you choose to include an Optavia-approved snack, you may have:

  • 1 Laughing Cow wedge

  • 1 Babybel Light round

  • 1 light string cheese

Remember that approved snacks are optional and are not intended to replace your Fuelings or Lean & Green meal.

Tips for Enjoying Cheese on Optavia

A few things that helped me stay on track:

Weigh your cheese.Even small differences in shredded cheese can affect portion sizes.

Be mindful of sodium. Many cheeses are higher in sodium, which may contribute to water retention.

Choose consistent options.Cottage cheese, low-fat shredded cheese, Babybel Light, Laughing Cow Light, and Parmesan are all easy choices to portion accurately.

Use cheese to add flavor—not frustration.Sometimes a little Parmesan or a Laughing Cow wedge is all it takes to make vegetables or lean protein much more enjoyable.

My Favorite Ways to Enjoy Cheese

When I was following the Optavia 5&1 Plan, these became my go-to choices:

  • Laughing Cow Light as a creamy Healthy Fat

  • Low-fat cottage cheese for a quick Lean meal

  • Parmesan sprinkled over roasted vegetables

  • Babybel Light for those moments when I wanted something satisfying

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that healthy eating doesn't always mean giving up the foods you love. Sometimes it's simply about learning how they fit into your plan.

The Optavia 5&1 Plan doesn't require you to give up cheese—it simply teaches you how to enjoy it in the right portions.
